Altered States - Ken Russell - USA - (1980)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080360/

Plot by Imdb:"A Harvard scientist conducts experiments on himself with a hallucinatory drug and an isolation chamber that may be causing him to regress genetically."

30 years old and still one of the best psychedelic movies of all-time, way better than the 70's hippies experiments, Ken Russell's Altered State stands as one of the weirdest experience on screen, an amazing mix between drugsploitation and SciFi. The cast is super solid, especially William Hurt who's carrying the whole movie on his shoulders; the hallucinations fx are old school but quite effective and add to the general feeling of strangeness. Ken Russell proves once again that he has no limits. He breaks every barriers of credibility and go all the way to a point where many would think the story is getting ludicrous. More than a drugsploitation movie, it's a very impressive exploration of a wild scientific theory. It could be related to the theory of Stanford Anthropology doctor Jeremy Narby in his book, "The cosmic Serpent", witch postulate that the ingestion of hallucinogenic plant Ayahuasca gives the Peruvian indigeneous  tribe Ashaninka some kind of molecular knowledge of life, especially the knowledge of the ADN structure of life, and helps them analyse the molecular properties of the forest around. In this movie, no ADN but a backward trip to our ancestors that ends up in the most peculiar way.
You definitively should try this movie, this is good medicine for the soul.

Mindgame - Masaaki Yuasa - Japan - (2004)

Plot by Imdb: "The struggling comic artist Nishi (voiced by Koji Imada) who has just met his childhood girlfriend Myon (Sayaka Maeda) and they catch things up in her father's yakitori pub where they come face to face with two Yakuza members. Nishi gets killed in the process but in a highly bizarre encounter with God in the afterlife, he is brought to life, manages to kill both gangsters, and makes a run for it with Myon and her sister Yan (Seiko Takuma) as they are pursued by other gang members. The three are then swallowed whole by a giant whale. Trapped inside with a man who has spent the last 30 years inside the whale's belly, Nishi, Myon and Yan finally get a chance what true happiness means for them."

Based on cult underground comic book from Robin Nishi, Mindgame is an instant classic. As an anime, it shows how diversified and immensely creative are the people at Studio 4°C. It shows also that the most psychedelic story can be made in animation, and also that this medium is perfect for adult storytelling. The general art direction is close to none and the movie is filed with marvelous ideas. The representation of "god" as an always changing entity is pure genius. If you love anime, you HAVE to watch this, if you don't, you have  to watch this anyway as this was one of the best Japanese movie of 2004.
Mindgame will be referred to in the future as a milestone in Animation and has already helped moving things forward for its  acceptance as an adult way of artistic expression.

MASTERPIECE.

Goyôkiba - Hanzo The Razor: Sword Of Justice - K. Misumi - Japan - (1972)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068650/

Plot by Imdb:"Hanzo is an incorruptible and unorthodox officer in Edo, as famous for his self-discipline and his love shaft as his sword. Against the backdrop of his magistrate's occasional rounding up of vagrants, Hanzo learns that an infamous killer is no longer on his island prison: did he escape or was he never there? Hanzo's investigation leads him to the magistrate's mistress, the killer's former lover. Hanzo pursues political questions that suggest complicity at the highest levels. Using sexual assault, he interrogates the mistress and later the favorite of Edo's most powerful woman. Can he get to the bottom of what's going on before powerful forces get him fired or killed?"

Don't fuck with Hanzo, or Hanzo will fuck you. And you'll be sorry. Believe me.
That's basically the main attraction of this Japanese movie, the first of the Hanzo trilogy. Played by Shintaro Katsu (who played Zatoichi a gazillion time before and after this film), brother of Tomisaburo Wakayama ("Lone wolf and cub"), Hanzo is a great over the top character that embodies everything exaggerated about this strange mix of sexploitation and chambara: a deadly sword, an implacable morality and...a gigantic and senseless penis. Kenji Misumi is an interesting director that had a lot of experience in commercial movie series, like the "Zatoichi" and "Lone Wolf and Cub" series, and does a good job here. A bit slow to unfold, the movie is amazing thanks to the hilarious sexual interrogation techniques used by Hanzo, fucking like a maniac the bad girls with an almighty righteousness that would have made John Holmes blemish. Sleazy in every way, as only the Japanese can do, Hanzo the Razor trilogy is a must see for the deviant fan of genre cinema.
