Tribute to Wesley Willis

Wesley Willis was a obese, schizophrenic black man from Chicago (some says homeless but apparently not, look in the comments section at the end of the page).
He had a big black bruise on his forehead, because he used to headbutt people to say hello.

He was also, and mostly, a genius musician and painter.

Check out some of his music below and you can check his paintings here.

Short doc:

"Alanis Morisette" song by Wesley Willis:

One of his hits: "Rock'n'rolls McDonalds":

Another masterpiece: "Cut the Mullet"

"I Wupped Batman's ass"

All Tarkovsk's movies online for free...All legal (if anybody cares).

Thanks to Film Annex, all of Tarkovsky's masterpieces are available online:

As a super fan of Russian cinema in general and Tarkovsky especially, I had to share this good news with you.

Akira Kurozawa and Ingmar Bergman considered Tarkovsky as their master, or at least as the greatest director of their time.

Enjoy.

Koenji hyakkei - music

Imagine a mix between Magma, Gong, Franck Zappa and Afro Ra, high on super skunk.
It's "Koenji hyakkei", they are making Zeuhl music and I love it.
Of course, it comes from...Japan. Where else ?

It's also highly effective against disturbing neighbors. They usually come back and beg you to stop it after only one hour. Magic !

ARAKIMENTARI - Doc about photography

Excellent documentary on genius Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi ARAKI. I was really touched by his views on life, great sensibility coming from someone that is more knowned for his Bondage and "dirty" pictures in general. His portraits are nothing short of amazing. A complete Erotomane, an amazing photographer, a great man indeed. ARAKI rules ! Check it out.

From punk director Sogo Ishii ("Electric Dragon 80.000V" and "Gojoe") comes this nice short about Shiatsu, applied to a urban environment. Very beautiful images and a relaxing experience.

The Stunt Man - Richard Rush - USA - (1980)

Plot from Imdb: "A fugitive stumbles on a movie set just when they need a new stunt man, takes the job as a way to hide out, and falls for the leading lady."

Richard Rush, after his years documenting Hippie life, like in Psych-Out, made this movie, that only can be described as a forgotten masterpiece.
A metafiction about cinema and the creative experience of a shooting set, it deals with the reality and illusion of our lives. Almost every characters in this movie invents themselves and lives in a dual reality/fiction world: the actors of the movie, but also the director, some of the crew and the general public of movies. And ourselves as viewers of the movie. The authorities will also be led in a false "world", only thanks to the will of the director. This "great Hollywood director" Eli Cross (played by Peter O'Toole and inspired by David Lean and John Huston) is really a great character: bigger than life, this god-like figure seems to model the all world around him, according to his will and interest of the moment. Even if the escape character has his life and freedom on the line, it looks like it's just another "game" for the director. Another character to be put in one of his illusion. The mixed sequences between the life of the main character and the shooting are great: it starts by a crash between those two seemingly irreconcilable worlds in the first "bridge sequence", where a criminal without anything to loose enters by accident the world of fake and play, the stuntman world, that's gonna be his way out...or maybe his fate.
Incredibly well shot, visually abundant, at moment, it touches genius. Unfortunately the movie is way too long and some scenes could have been cut or felt unnecessary or redundant. But this is really not important as the energy of the movie is so tremendous, it will blow your mind. Some scenes are as strong as some in a Frederico Fellini movie. Technically tremendous, scenaristically incredible, artistically marvellous, this amazing movie is to be discovered immediately by every movie fan.

PS: There is a two hours long documentary about the making of this movie called: "Sinister saga- the making of The Stuntman"...shot in this metafiction style, a cross between illusion and reality.

Themroc - Claude Faraldo - France - (1973)

Plot: "An working-class man turns into a modern caveman."

Very enjoyable "revolutionary" and "arty" movie from Claude Faraldo and a bunch of cult actors from the 70's (Café de la Gare crew, Miou-miou, Patrick Dewaere, Coluche, etc...). You can watch it even if you don't understand french as there is no dialogues as such: everybody is speaking an invented/mumbled language, except Michel Piccoli, the main character that use the world "Themroc" during the entire movie, for everything. After an incident at the factory, Piccoli locks himself in his flat and brakes the wall, to make it more like a cave, the neighbors are mysteriously attracted to his regresive way of life and begin to join him. A group of policemen and some workers from the factory are joining below his flat to try to force them out of their asocial behavior. Doesn't really works as Piccoli goes hunting at night and comes back with a policeman that they'll use for diner ! Wonderfully free and hilarious at time, "Themroc" shows that another way of making movies is possible.
