Rabid (also known as Rage) - David Cronenberg - Canada - (1977)

Plot by Imdb:"A young woman develops a taste for human blood after undergoing experimental plastic surgery, and her victims turn into rabid, blood-thirsty zombies who proceed to infect others, which turns into a city-wide epidemic."

Excellent follow up to "Shivers" and annunciating the little known masterpiece "The Brood", this vampire-zombies-virus paranoid movie is one of the gems from the early years of master David Cronenberg carrier. Low budgeted but already carrying all the ingredients of Cronenberg's obsessions: mutation, biological decay, contamination, social ostracism in front of a disease, society (or culture) seen as weak in front of biology, etc...The carrier is sexy pornstar Marylin Chambers, that pulls out a great performance and shows everybody that she can act with clothes on, as well. As she carries on spreading the virus, the weakness of human sociological behavior in front of a biological threat is more and more present until a chaotic final that is clearly shows that our society can fall into panic anytime, confronted to its very organic composition: us.

Then our only response for survival is a non-human one: extermination.

 

Incredibly modern in its themes, this Cronenberg movie will creep under your skin and make you unconfortable. 

If you start spitting white mossy liquid and feeling enraged, it's too late.

Eat the schoolgirls: Osaka Telephone Club - Naoyuki Tomomatsu - (1997) - Japan

Plot by Imdb: "Two young adults are doing dirty works for a yakuza gang, making sadistic rape/snuff films. Both of them are sexually obsessed; one is addicted to telephone sex whilst the other can only function sexually, whilst seeing mutilated female corpses."

Before joining the  Nikkatsu's "Sushi Typhoon" production team, alongside with Iguchi, Nishimura and many others, Tomomatsu made this very disturbing picture, that has very little to do with his futur absurd-gory-tongue-in-cheek productions, like Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl. More a Pinku movie turn gross, "Eat the schoolgirl" is to be handled with care, as it is obviously not for everyone. Not for your girlfriend, for example.  The amount of misoginistic sadism and extremely deviant male behaviour is difficult to believe. But the real interesting thing is the stylistic archievment that this movie represent: It is as weird, twisted and unsafe as other masterpieces of the genre like "Angst" or "Henry". Higly recommended if you can stomach this style of production, it shows once again that even a small production in a sub-sub-genre (pinku horror) can result in an impacting and memorable movie. 

A dark, dark shocker from an interesting director. Watch it at  your own risk.

From Beyond - Stuart Gordon - USA - (1986)

I like Stuart Gordon. His movies are fun and really appealing to an all-time Lovecraft fan, like myself. It reminds me of my childhood when, with  a friend of mine, we put our money together to buy the first french edition of the Lovecraft biography by Sprague de Camp. Good ol' times ! 

Back to  Stuart Gordon. Good director of fantastic movies, he went on to direct some weird movies of his own that I particularly like: King of the ants, Edmond and Stuck, for example, are a rare mix of social / cultural comment, dark humor and plain insanity. Ironic and poignant, they left you wondering if you have to laugh or cry.

In From Beyond, no problem, you can laugh. Adding to Lovecraft's strange and paranoid story, Gordon injects some 80's humor in  the dialogues and delivers a movie that's packed with action, silicon makeup and  old-school CGI. The resut is a blast for the fan of horror comedy genre, like myself. Get a beer, sit back and relax for a nice ride that will get you through psychiatry, parallel universes, monsters, a frantic Jeffrey Combs (Re - animator) with a giant hypophys gland growing out of his head, Ken Foree (Dawn of the dead) in a blaxploitation baddass mockery and Barbara Crampton, sexy as hell  in an SM outfit...A 10 in my checklist.

"Chola" , for those who have no Latino street culture whatsoever, is the feminine of "Cholo", a person from Hispanic and American Indian origin.

This Latino B-movie looks like a sweet mix between classic horror homage and a TV novella....
